I like Combat Flight Sims to be arguably Historically accurate in everything with the exception of "NoseArt" and Pilot Skins.
Reason being, as much as I would like to have been O'Hare, Moelders, Nishizawa, Tuck etc. I feel somewhat strange flying in their specifically marked aircraft (some with specific 'NoseArt') knowing that I would fall short of their capability and individual characterizations on a mission (on or offline). I like to collect Ace skins so that I may incorporate them into missions.
Think of it this way, who has not flown a prepared mission and either by glancing out your Cockpit (or going external - depending on parameters) recognized an Ace's Plane and (irregardles of the dogmatic Ace AI) had their pulse race just a bit on recognizing it?
Suspension of disbelief is a natural inherent factor especially if you're a historical stickler!
I like customized 'Nose Art' in that you are individually and actively participating in an insertion of yourself into a 'what if' historical scenario.
Regarding rating/nudity. I think that blatant 'Porn' is a bit out of place here whereas nudity is a matter of opinion. Historically, NoseArt was based on very risque role models (of the time) as well as the vivid imagination of many of the post-pubescant Servicemen from the United States. I like Historical NoseArt, and individual, stylized NoseArt as long as it falls within a loosely based 'look' as to how it might have been done back then (IMHO). If you look at some of the NoseArt of the time, most didn't have a 'polished' look, as the Artwork was probably done by the Squadron's and/or Groundcrew's 'recognized' Artist.
Photo images or photorealistic airbrush as NoseArt seems historically out of place (again IMHO), though I am not offended - unless of course it is a blatant rip off of a Contemporary Artists Work.
When you have so much available talent within the flight sim community, there really is no need for this to happen.
Pilot Skins: I've seen the myriad out there in my Netcache folder from Super Heroes to scantilly clad women (claiming to be Women as well)! The Pilot Skin is even more individualized than the NoseArt but probably has a lot more leeway (and chuckles!) than anything within our arguably stringent historical purview.
On the Hakenkreuz, like the real planes, I like them to be there. I am also aware that the men who flew those planes did not always agree with what it signified.
I also respect and have no problems flying on servers or with hosts that do not prefer it to appear on aircraft of the times.
