But as said, don't attempt to dogfight low level in one, as your asking to die.
With the latest release of the Spitfire XIV mod for IL2 I thought to have found my favorite plane but after fierce flying to test the XIV thouroughly I decided to stick to my P47D as it is much more lethal and durable as far as BnZ tactics go or duels at high alt.
Usually I fly with a friend wing to wing waiting for any target that comes up or meets us at the same alt. With my reasonable skills I have a 50% kill rate when engaged at the same alt in a fight at high alt and a 70% kill rate when I do BnZ. The P47D can be awesome for this task, however, the "IL2 Jug" doesn't seem to accept a lot of punishment as where one round from a Fw190D9 easily rips the fuselage in half? It looses rudders and airlerons fairly easy as well which seems to be a contradiction of what history about these aircaft learns us. There are numerous tales about the famous durability and amount of punishment it could take up to where enemy fighter shot up all their ammo at a P47 but were not able to knock it out of the sky.
If those features were availabe in Il2 for the P47 Thunderbolt it would defenitely become the most awsome and feared fighter in this game!
Anyway, the P47 does it for me and the last time I flew another fighter has been quite a while. Sometimes I pick a La5FN "Noob fighter" to kick some ass (and let my ass kicked) on a Russian 'anything goes' server where most of the action happens below 5000ft.
P47 all the way!!!!
