Woohoo! Satellitedata update: Asterdem works finally
#9

Comparison SMRT data from nasa satilite v new data SMRT corrected and fixed missing patches NOT fixed in 3DEM , but fixed manually by topo maps and ordinate survey coordinate mapping.

The Link you put into first post is the way to go with map making for IL-2 , please use this way and new data smrt files ,i have been saying this for along time , below is the proof to inspire you.....

First photo is GOOGLE EARTH snapshot of K2 mountain

The above picture is looking at K2 mountain in the CENTRE of the photo....from the corcordia Glacier , the K2 mountian is several miles away and looks small Smile but take note of terrian differences in this example of 4 photos.

Below is NASA DATA SMRT ,,, FIXED missing holes or patches using 3DEM patch fix...

The K2 mountain is MISSING !!! it should be just above the left elevator as you look at the photo but NASA DATA has HOLEs of missing SMRT data and 3DEM fixes the holes by looking at the edges of the hole and averaging the height values to fill the GAP , so K2 no more Smile , you only see TWO very small SIDE bits of the Mountain , if i flew over this area i would see a FLATTENED bowl shape with these two tiny peaks on the rim of the bowl ......
Please NOTE this was a test map and textures was not important i was testing the terrian shape not the terrian textures Smile
Also notice the flattening effect the 3dem fix patch has done to all the terrian surroundings , i think this is one reason IL-2 is Flat (ish) MAPS ! , all good excellent TEXTUREs but FLAT MAPS sorry have to say it..as it is.

Not seen a GOOD mountain yet in IL-2 , but soon maybe, if a map maker takes the time and listens and reads the words.

Next photo is REAL PHOTO taken SAME rough area as other photos in example K2 mountain Centre of view again .

As you can compare , GOOGLE EARTH appears FLATTENED but close to realistic terrian shape ,,, but copare NASA SMRT and its like looking at the moon and comparing with Florida Smile

NOW that you can see the difference between google earth and NASA data fixed via 3DEM and a REAL PHOTO of K2 mountain , you can see the mistake mapmakers have been making and i do believe your NEW maps will have much BETTER results using the link you posted in first post ,,, granted not all areas are availible on the NEW data files but it can be added to a map to save 3dem Messing up a nice hardwork map makers efforts.

Below is a map of K2 mountian but NOT fixed in 3DEM , just downloaded straight from the new data files and made to a map...again look at terrian not textures terrian is important example .

Close enough id say Smile

Especially when ALL IL-2 maps use the SECOND PHOTO EXAMPLE at PRESENT !!! we need to get more MAP MAKERS organised using BETTER DATA files , this will BOOST the REALISTIC look of a MAP !

Mapmakers take the time to make it look real with good TEXTURING but missed the most important TERRIAN shape point , textures do not make realistic MAPS ,,,,,TERRAIN CONTURES SHAPE do,,,,, the texture only gives impression or illusion of virtual world.

Mapmakers wont like that being said but ,,,if i made a map of a FLat plain desert look like THE ALPS from above with texturing , it can look great from above,,,,, just land on its TERRAIN and ask what they think then of your map again .

Please use the new data smrt its much better and i personally think this example shows it better than words which im not good at doing.

Normally i dont bother posting much over here but i can see inspiration and it NEEDs proof to push the FUTURE MAPPING to better position than what we have currently.
I hope this post was worthwhile at doing that, task.

Now im going back into my RAF662 DEN Smile Good luck and please PASS the WORD !
