SFS file questions...
#1

Hi all -
It would help me a whole bunch if i understood the .SFS file structure, 'cos right now i have a really vague understanding of the things, and while the SFS extractor, GREPing & stupidly scrolling the things on a hex editor offers some clues, i'm sure someone here knows the things inside-out, and might be willing to help.
Thus far i've guessed that the .SFS files are a weird form of collected resources & "load order" (??) scripts (pointers to within the SFS file & other files?), kind'o like an executable file with a whole bunch of data segments & code segments & .dlls sprinkled throughout. Stop laughing. I know i'm confused. A whole bunch of the resource are .TGAs, meshes, .mats, etc, but the rest of the extracted files (using the SFS Extractor by Tim), with long no-extension names, are *also* .TGAs (both standard & the ones that start with "IMF10"), .mats etc. There are so many, that opening each one to see what it is not practical (perhaps i should write an applet to automatically rename them based on their magic numbers, but if one already exists...). Finally, if i modify some of the files i've extracted, can I roll them back up into the .SFS file, or do i drop them in the MODS folder & hope for the best (worked with my GUI mod).
I'm not even sure if this is the right forum to ask questions like this. If it's not, perhaps a moderator would be nice enough to move it to the right forum. I'm totally green to IL-2 modding, and have a whole bunch of similar questions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
-d.
