In WWII, the combat spread was much wider apart, so they could see and cover eachother's six. In such a tight formation, I don't see how that would be possible.

Sorry for butting in but IMO it's just a concession to the movie making art. Every aviation movie has had to do it to keep the action close to the camera view.
