The Little Boy and Fat Man were specially modified to protect against the possibility of a detonation due to a crash by one of the cheif technicians after he saw a B29 crash on takeoff and was horrified at the thought of the nuke destroying their own airbase. For this reason the nukes were armed in the air by a technician, long after leaving base.
