Planes of this era had "can" combustors, so there really was no open flame at all. The combustion gas was diluted with bypass air as it emerged from the "can" to drop the temperature substantially (turbine blades would melt at full flame temperature). So, no flames should seen out of the back under normal conditions, and for that matter, I doubt you could see flame even if you looked directly up the tailpipe.
