Inability to lower or raise the landing gear due to damage is modeled in the game. To try it, lower the landing gear at a high enough speed that wind resistance will damage it, but not tear it off, then try to retract it.

I don't know if landing gear failure due to damage is modeled. That is, the enemy shoots the tire of your retracted landing gear and you only discover the fact when you try to land.
