Indeed he was. Although the Wagner piece was inspired by the Volsunga Saga. I understand he was a greedy bastard (as I am with altitude ) so it seemed appropriate. Conincidentally, Fafnir was also the name assigned to the BMW/Bramo 323 Fafnir airplane engine which powered the Do17P/Z, Ar196, Fw200, Do24, and others. 5500 were built before the line shut down in 1944. Fafnir's greediness comes into play here too because apparently the 323 was a bit of a gas guzzler.
