Cleaning dust is never a bad idea, but your problem is more likely to come from software, maybe a graphic effects conflict.
I had a similar trouble myself. I've played with almost every version of Il2 (stock, 4.09, UI, HSFX and UP) and, in some configurations, it happened that a plane crashing onto the ground caused the game to crash, too.
Since I started using the Generic Mod Enabler, this happened once in a while, but only after i had changed something. So, strange as it may seem, i got the impression that simply installing mods IN A DIFFERENT ORDER solves the problem.
I still suffer crashes, but much less often.
