p-51 On a carrier
#16

In late 1944, the army airforce was so desperate for long range fighter cover (the Mustang had a range of 1600 miles with drop tanks) in the Pacific, top secret trials (code name Seahorse project) were carried out by testing modified Mustangs taking off and landing off the deck of US carriers. Plans were canceled for "Seahorse" after the Marines captured Iwo Jima, establishing a base the fighters could use to escort the B-29 Superfortress

I'm all for carrier and naval planes in general, and some easy, fast mods would be nice from time to time, while waiting for the epic projects
such as magpie's whirlwind, which i can't wait for!

Well it's not as bad as the lerch. And it was only a experiment but i think it would still be awesome if we can have it added into the game. It can be part of those mission;s that are in a what if theme. So are we going to move forward with this?

I like the idea of this mod, as it's a fairly easy one to accomplish (I think!).

If you want another "easy" idea for the P-51, how about making a late model P-51D-25 or -30 block? All it would need is zero length rocket rails under the wings and some additional weapon loadouts. (Add options for 5" HVARs plus 110 and 165 gallon drop tanks.) The only P-51 drop tanks in the game right now are 75 gallon tanks. 110 gallon tanks (not the 108 gallon paper tanks, those were totally different) were used quite a bit in the MTO and by the Iwo Jima based Mustangs. The Iwo fighter groups also sometimes used 165 gallon tanks (from P-38s) for extra range on those long missions to Japan. The 110 gallon tanks are virtually identical to the 75 gallon ones except in size. The easiest way to tell the difference is that the 110s had a more prominent seam around the middle and a flush filler cap.

Hi all:

Congompasse touched on something: catapults. With the P-51s higher take off speed, it would need a catapult no? Either that or start from the very stern of the Lex. Maybe.

What we need before much longer, is cats on carriers.

Great days all.
