HSFX deletes your F'ing files
#16

I hope you manage to get your files back. It does say in big bold letters on the first page of the installer that it'll do that as well as in the readmes, though. It's so loads of people don't install HSFX and then complain that it doesn't work because they've still got their crazy assortment of mods in there...the mods folder still works with HSFX..

You just let me be the judge of that... What if I don't care for some of the mods contained in the SFS files ? What if not everything is included in those SFS ? So everything worthy of being used is in the SFS and the rest just doesn't count ?

...this is the exact line of thinking of anybody who is faced with having to install a big mod-pack, when all they really need is one or 2 mods from it, and are then told to d/l the megagig pack.... Cry

"IMPORTANT : For user's with Mod Folders, the Version 4.1 Installer will delete the Mods folders and all files, as they are
no longer needed, because the content is now all contained in Compiled SFS files.

If you want to keep these folders, you should rename them, or move them before running the Installer. "

Look chaps, it's easy to say all this in hindsight-but when you are an experienced user who knows what he's doing then it's quite easy to make such a mistake Wink

Sorry to hear that , hope you can recover the lost folder.

Must say this was no issue for me as I have my original Mods on an external drive, and have installed 4.09m + HSFX 4.01 on new machine. I have to say it appears to be the way to go for online, and with the exception of a few WIP has everything and more . I guess the only mod I won't enable is 6dof; but only because I just have TIR2.

Using JSGME is a breeze and can select the High res options for Screenshots etc. or Lower for improved FR online. These are just "local" mods and only affect your PC when online.

Load time is 30-40 seconds vs 4 minutes for my old sound mod monster.

Despite your initial disaster, I think you'll grow to love it too.

That's a rather silly thing to say. I've been using mods for almost a year and I always read the instructions before installing. It's saved me quite alot of grief.

Yes. In hindsight I agree. It was a rather silly thing to say. Its so daft that I expect some readers thought I was joking.

Its called making a BACK UP.

When ever new mod packs came out I always, always, always, did I mention always, make a back up of my mod folders.

Yea, I made a total of 5 complete copies of IL2 just so I could keep them straight. I still have a 4.08 clean, 4.09 clean, UI 1.2, Ultrapack 1.8, and now HSFX 4.1

OK, a good old system restore seems to have done the trick. Thanks for mentioning that phil. I'm keeping the little program linked to by VP, as it could come in handy in the future too. Cheers guys !

Ahah, and looks what I got for assuming I knew what that HSFX installer would do. that stupid Hubris of mine... I'm a strong believer in learning from one's mistakes, so that should teach me a thing or two for next time.

Ok then, so I should have read more carefully and made a backup before I went all 'mr experienced user guy' on this one, my mistake. It's not HSFX's fault that I just can't seem to get anything right today. Sorry 'bout the little venting, I ought to stay away from the coffee pot after 9am...

I still can't quite understand why they need to erase the pre-existing Mod folder, and I still think it is a completely stupid thing to do. I'll just try and phrase that differently next time Big Grin

crt=2 i guess. For SEOW, it ensures that no one has any differing files structure.

Annoying the annoying, so you don't have to.

Sorry to say it, but when I read the first post I just had to chuckle. When I saw it was someone who was a mod here and should know better I had to laugh out loud. This was a lesson learned way back when IL2s first patches were released and I lost my personal settings. After that I learned to read first backup second and install last. Works every time.

They removed the mods folder to assure that it worked right away. Keeping the mods folder intact can introduce unknown issues since anything in the mods folder will take precedence.

Happy to help von-barb glad you are sorted Wink

can i say just this? I know it is all the make things a lot easier for us but for now watching all the differnet sites for MODS/Updates confuses the hell out of me, i dunno where to look anymore these days and find AAA more then i can handle on the reading front in a day. So can understand his mistake completly.

btw i download all that is needed for HSFX install based game i just have to install it now.

I'm glad the system restore worked....the undelete program probably wouldn't get your files back because during the install the very first thing that happens is the deletion of your Files/Mods folders...then they are overwritten by the new stuff.
