Map Building for Beginners

I think that may have been from me when I was doing the volcano erea.
There's a number of volcanos on that island that was all guess work, still have to rework some of land rgb on the peaks as I can see now too.
I may have slipped the pencil tool into the sea by mistake.

Will still try to redo the map_c and map_c.tga_table today

If that doesn't work I'll put up a new thread about it to see if any one else can possibly pin point
the problem.

When I load it it firstly comes up with the jave script then I try again and the game crashes.
I am running a copied on c drive sound mod 3.9 and 4.09 mods lansdscape perfect

I only have map objects in the map making game larones hangar /fortification, japacks palms, Fred's trees, Delvipers bridge objects and his new wood pack.

Last night I disabled all those mods thinking that there might be a conflict but still no go.
Basically anything just for map modding

I'm glad all my calculations were correct this time. SSSHHEEWWW!
Glad to see a picture

Thanks for the time out to have look to see if there were any problems with this map.

I redid the mapc3 tool this morning checked the naming of ap_c.tga and map_c.tga_table

Put her in the game and she loaded up nicely

Now I have a hell of a lot of work to do. adjusting all the island coast lines tomorrow.

I started going around the islands last night and noticed a few more faults but not as serious as the beach bar that you found.
One was a very large island joined by a small section of beach to the main island Efate
Two small islands joined together by beach.

I've never done this before just have to nknow how.

You mentioned something about map_c or Mymap_c

Lots of work with the coasts today.

Cheers Kirby

I'm curious about the ed_map_T file that are in some maps.
Is this file necessary?
I took over the BurmaLower map from Fabianfred and he had this file included with it.
I never made any changes to it but have made changes to the other map files.

Yesterday I took out the ed_map_T file and it seems everything still works the same.
Just wondering what it's there for and if I need it.

I believe ed_map_T locates water for purposes of regulating vehicle travel - If vehicles can cross rivers, for example. -viking

Viking is right

It consists of only two colours, black (RGB 0 which is land) & grey (RGB 28 which is water).

Grey acts as a barrier to vehicles but if you draw a line of black across a river.
then the vehicles can cross the river at that point.

If you don't want ships to sail into an area of water you make that area black.
However, drawing grey on the land will not allow ships to sail onto the land.

I cant see much use for it myself, & I've only found two of the stock maps which
use it, Balaton & FinsGulf.

You mean that with that we can make shallow water crossing for some rivers? Confusedhock:

Yes - and without I believe any vehicle can cross any river. --viking

Thanks Viking and KevinP.
I think that's why Fabianfred had it in this map. He wasn't able to put normal bridges because of rivers not being at 0 elevation and maybe this would allow the vehicles to cross the rivers.
I guess I should leave the file in :!:

I make the area flat with map_h (yeah..i use PAINT Tongue ), place the plates but dont undestand how to use the waypoints, taxis,etc...

Oh, and by the way...figured out how to make rivers and lakes.I made a copy of xxx.Grey and edited the it , yes...with MSN PAINT again and filled the river courses with the red color, for lakes is easy. Lakes have the same elevation so its one color in the grey.bmp..just use the fill and it will be very close to the real area. And i made the map_c with this bmp. After that i came back to the original xxx grey.bmp and made the map.h and the coast align thingy... voila!, have rivers and lakes on the map.

Anyway to make the Water texture not transparent?? Because if you fly very low u can see like below the mountains...

This worked great for putting in rivers that were not made by Microdem. I tried it out a few times on an inland map, with no coastline. Rivers came on the map.

But, I seem to have gotten them as deep canyons, not as rivers that flow more or less level with the surrounding land.

Here is what I mean:

Looks nice for a canyon landscape, but for the map I'm working on it is not really the way it should be.

So my question is, how does one make rivers run more or less level with the surrounding land? How to avoid the deep canyon effect?

In map_h, select the contiguous current river height rgb value and bucket fill with the rgb value of the surrounding landscape? --viking

Hallo!

Sorry for my idiot question, but I have problems getting the edits I make to a map "stick".

I haven't started a new map or anything, I'm just fooling around with the Online 9a to get the hang of the basics.

As per Kevins instructions, I have a folder named Empty1a in my maps folder, and another Empty1a in the MODS/MAPMODS/Maps folder containing a load.ini. The Empty1a is also listed in the all.ini-file.

When I add textures and texts to the map in FMB, new files appear on the Maps/Empty1a folder, so something is right. If I exit the map, all changes but tiles disappear. If I exit the game completely, the map will start up without any of my changes, even tiles, when I start the game again. The changes made to the text-file and map_T are there in the files in the Empty1a-folder, but it appears the game is reading from the original default map-file, not from what I have done.

Does anyone know what I have bugged up?

That works OK if over the length of the river course, terrain height doesn't alter significantly. But if you start a river in a mountainous area and then let it flow to the lowlands, I don't think you can avoid canyons in the higher parts, since I don't think you can really manually adjust the terrain height all that accurately in a smooth, flowing manner.

You have to copy the newly created files in the maps folder to the mods/mapmods/maps folder. -viking
