Importing models from Silent Hunter - The first steps

Out of interest, Ashes, what poly count do you get with that model?

change poly quality with keeping UVW coordinates for textures its no problem with good tools imho

Just wondering if anyone made contact over at Subsim.com, you never know what could come of this, they are a game modding community too after all 8)

If you imported a CV into the game, would it be able to conduct flight operations, or be just for looks? This might be the way to get a better representation of the many different carriers that are missing from PF, assuming they would be "operational" and not just eye candy.
#19

Go ahead and establish contact briyeo.
I haven't taken it that far.

Seems like a lot of the good European ops ships are in the Mediteranean Expansion Pack which is SHIII compatible.
I guess the PTO ships will mainly be in SHIV.
Might as well start by finding a copy of SHIII Med Expansion and stripping the ship models out of that.
The export utility, linked at the start of the thread is pretty easy to use.

I havn't looked in detail at an IL2 carrier model but I guess with MshConverter all the bits necessary for full carrier ops are accessible. Perhaps someone who knows could say more.

SH4 has a carrier named US EarlyWar, which bears a close resemblance to the "Wasp"- no "Yorktowns" though, probably as a result of the N-G affair.
The "Kaga" isn't in SH4 (neither is "Akagi"), but "Hiryu" is, so she could be a candidate for converting for IL2. "Soryu", although nominally rated as "Hiryu's" sister, was in reality a different ship and the SH4 "Hiryu" would need some remodelling to accurately represent "Soryu".

Asheshouse- if you require any SH3 or SH4 ships, PM me.

Thanks for the offer GerritJ9, but I'd better press on with the projects I have part completed and not get distracted.

asheshouse,

Have you seen any Japanese Cruisers available on the subsim website?
#23

Have not seen any on the mods page but there are Japanese warships, including the battleship Yamato in Silent Hunter IV. I don't have the game so I've not got a list of the ships in it.
#24

SH4 contains several IJN heavy and light cruiser classes, such as "Mogami", "Takao", "Sendai" and "Agano". The "Ashigara" and "Tone" heavy cruiser classes are missing; of the battleship classes, "Nagato" is missing. To compensate, "Ise" and "Hyuga" are available as both full battleships and as carrier-battleships. Wonder what you could actually fly from them, though, never mind actually landing anything on their short flight decks.

I'd suggest converting a few merchantmen first before adding any warships, though- a few extra types would make a huge difference to the sim.

Love the fact that a modder, that is in fact doing something illegal (reverse engineering of the game) comments copyright...

Grand idea, keep it up! Wink

Well. Sorry for trying to save some people some work and legal headaches. Considering since the last time i mentioned copyright on a mod that uses other games content, the makers of that game contacted the modder to cease and desist after a while. BOB2 ring a bell?

Just trying to save someone some work....

And yes i see hypocrisy in my comment, me being a modder myself, but i am modding current content in the game. Not taking content from other games which do not associate with IL-2. Oleg now sees (if he even remembers IL-2) that mods are keeping this game alive. So the chances of them taking action on us is small.

Now i hope SH doesnt care about you importing their models, i welcome new ships for the sim, i just dont want to be the one who says "I told you so."
#26

SH modders have been converting SH3 ships for SH4 and vice-versa without any legal problems so far, plus using original ships as a basis for something quite different. To stay on the safe side, one could restrict such additions to IL2 to those ships made by the SH community members (with permission of the original modeller of course). Even with such a restriction, there are lots of ships which could be added- HMS "Repulse", "Graf Zeppelin" to name just a few.

Yamato = Battleship

Yamamoto = Japanese Admiral.

Sh3 and 4 where made much more modding friendly then the old Sh2 was.
But don't know what they think about using there work in an entirely other game then he SH series.
Better ask first then to be accused of stealing their work.

I've seing a lot of fighting with different modding groups when they have noticed that some one has used their work for something else then they planned for.

One story was the Sh3 Seawolves addon that included a lot of free mods that where sold as a addon dvd.

I completely agree. I started this post just to highlight the possibility of using Silent Hunter ships and to post a few links. I guess there are a lot of people out there with an interest in both sims, so it makes sense to cooperate, and to give due credit when your project involves developing work started by others. I dont see anyone disagreeing with this principal.

It would be really great if the Ships in Il2 had a damage modell like the ships in SH3

wont this slow the game down alot though?
