Great job,

this battle was fought high up as bomber escort primarily and as such we shouldn't get low at all. The 109 had a very short time over target and had no time for sightseeing over the country side Smile

I think it looks beautiful and look fwd to fly a crippling close escort as ordered by G

Beautiful textures!
About the 2D towns, no I don't like it, cause I like to fly (for sheer flying pleasure) low over the maps, but I understand your decision...

Me  But not because of the graphics...I'm just hoping for better AI and FM.

Yeah, I wonder what a face I would have made if someone showed me these pictures a year ago... Now we have seen pictures of the textures without the map, and shots of the map without the textures...I can't wat to see them brought together! Some low level shots please with 3d autogen?

With regard to 2D/3D buildings, I've noticed that destroyed buildings have no actual physical presence (you can fly through them - try it), and that (possibly related) they have a much lesser effect on reducing frame rates (again try flying over a completely destroyed city).

So what I was wondering was - what if it was possible to create a building where the destroyed version had exactly the same skin (i.e. looked undestroyed). If the map maker populated their map with these buildings, and then "destroyed" them (leaving them appearing exactly the same) would we be able to get larger, more densely-packed cities without reducing frame-rates?

There would be some disadvantages - i.e. you could fly through the buildings, and they wouldn't be able to be destroyed any further, but it may be an alternative to completely flat 2D cities.

Just a thought........

No, that's not actually true. The destroyed buildings just don't have a collision model. They still have an actual 3D presence with textures and faces and vertices.

Nice idea, but that's not how it works Smile

Anyway, the 2D city option isn't just to do with FPS - it's also because at altitudes above 1000ft the photorealistic textures are miles more convincing than the actual populated cities.

You beat me to it Cannon. These 2 shots were taken at roughly the same altitude. You can see in the bottom picture that, although the trompe l'oeil effect is diminished at that height, the buildings and other areas don't look 'flat'. The shot of Berlin at top looks 3D but the randomly spaced Monopoly houses don't really put across a large industrial city. The uniform, cold grey is 'symbolic' of concrete (it doesn't really look like concrete) and in my opinion the overall effect is like a model railway village. Having said that, to each their own and I don't expect to please all the people all the time.
