Along with MANY others, I have been patiently awaiting the Canon Map/WORLD. The cities and towns, and airfields look marvelous! Exquisitely detailed and accurate....well worth waiting for... I have OOOh'ed and Aaah'ed over posted Canon Map pics...many times! The accuracy of the airfields I know will be unprecedented! I am immensely impressed with the WIP...

But...

I've now seen Rise of Flight's towns/cities.... I hope that the thrill of flying over Canon's Map's towns(when they arrive) is not deadened/reduced by comparison.

ROF has LOTS and LOTS of faults for a Flight Sim, and some wonderful advances, BUT it has tremendously impressive graphics especially: Towns, cities, landscape, setc ...

Just as a point of Reference, some RoF towns:

I really hope that the Canon map is released Very SOON...even if only 80% complete. In some respects, the dilemma may be reflective of Oleg's 3 year delay in releasing SOW:BofB. Once he has achieved his perfection, he may have missed the departure of the proverbial boat from the dock...just as he arrives with his PERFECT chronometer. The ship will have sailed with something seemingly less than perfect, but impressively useful and to which one might become accustomed and loyal, in part due to its being immediately available to the departing Captain of the Ship. ROF, of course, is France/Belgium based....Canon's Map mostly, I should think, would want to be focussed on the UK cities, towns, bases, landscapes, campaigns, etc... The thrust of the BofB being the battles over Britain, not France. I'd recommend Focus.

Just random philosophical thoughts....

I'm impressed with Canons, 352nd, Slovakian, and ROF terrain, but I doubt they will be anywhere near the detail of SOW BOB's map. Just the inclusion of actual river bank elevations included in the SOW map will make a huge difference in the look of the terrain. Actually I think the rivers have banks in some of the city screenshots in IL-2 BOP, which has some of the most realistic terrain I've seen in a flight sim yet. Although I don't think the IL-2 BOP terrain will look as good up close as it does from a distance.

I think you can't compare Canon's map with SOW or ROF.
Canon has to deal with the limitations of the IL2 engine and that's not the case with SOW and ROF.
Another thing is both new games are meant for high end rigs to render everything very detailed and with good FPS.
What I can remember Canon wants his map to be playable with acceptable FPS for the average or average+ computer, which means he made his houseblocks less detailed or with less polygones (or someting like that, I am not a modder but his explanation is somewhere here in the 51 pages) so everybody will be able to enjoy his map. With his knowledge of modding it won't be a problem for him to make things as highly detailed as possible but then we will see here dozens of pages with complaints of staggering PC, CTD, 1 frame per second etc etc and how to solve this.

Hi guys,

Some screenshots of Cherbourg harbour. The airfield at Cherbourg-Quequeville will be present - just hasn't been built yet Smile

Doolittle. I appreciate your comments. The ROF pics do look amazing, and I only wish that the Il-2 engine was optimised for large cities. I'm doing the best I can with what I have. Regarding focus, don't forget that it's called the 'Channel Map', not the 'Battle of Britain' map. Also, with your colourful metaphor of missing boats, you're mistaken if you think I'm trying to catch the boat. If I'm finished before the boat sails, the captain can enjoy my 'perfect chronometer'. If I've missed it then I'll just enjoy it myself.

I have a question though... How is that italian destroyer (Shippack's Ital00 or 01 ? ) suposed to enter and leave the dock he's in... not even enough room to manoever Big Grin
