[WIP] Spitfire Mk XVIe
#61

FM's won't be the same as the current Spit IX. Due to faults in the current FM's for the Spit IX's the XVI will have a corrected FM, so you may find that your spitfire flies a bit different now.

Slot work is pretty much done, just awaiting final 3D and FM. Still confirming with VH what models we are going to do (at least the bubble and clip). All will have non-sequential lettering for RAF, opening canopies and complete historic loadout (will include AAA 50cal APIT weapon mod). Here are some pics to wet ones appetites (ignore the skin, not supposed to have outer MGs) Smile

Late-war Spitfire Mk XVIe from 74SQN. Armed with 2x RP-3 Rockets, scouting out enemy armour in the Ardennes:

A round of applause for VH-Rock who so far has done a brilliant job on these Smile

Confusedhock: beautiful work going on here gents Big Grin

Howlin' is doing the FM and hopefully will have a bit of a report back this weekend.

The bubble top though would definately need a new FM! Indeed the drag is reduced, but you also have to think about the weight. The late model MkXVIs and IXs with this canopy had a fuel tank removed which drops the weight a fair bit, not only to mention the weight dropped by the smaller fuselage. The payoff was obviously a reduced range but the added visability and increased performance were definately worth it.

David603: Since Zorin has been working on the MkXIV bubble top for a while probably best to leave it to him. But if you ask VH nicely I'm sure he will let you work on the Mk 21 or even work with you on it Smile

I love flying the Mk XIV but the Mk 21 has been a big favourite of mine ever since I converted a plastic kit of a Mk XIV into one, so I think it would be more than a little fitting if I did the same in Il2 Smile

If VH is happy with the idea then I would love to take on this project.

I haven't modded Il2 before, but I can model in 3D, so I should be able to make the required revisions to the external model and the LODs, but I would probably need some help with the FM and altering the guns. I think the DM might need a little work too.

your welcome to her Smile I got alot of stuff on right now, If you need any help drop me a line Smile
Thanks, I will do my best to do justice to this beautiful plane.

Hopefully if this works out then it would be possible to use the wings from the Mk21 and the fuslage of the bubble top MkXIV (with some detail changes) to make a Mk22, and maybe even go though the series up to the Seafire Mk47 Smile

Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself here  so I will get to work on the 21 now, and see how this turns out.

Any news yet?? eagerly awaiting its release!!! I also just saw a picture of a MK XVI with the C wing and 4 20mm cannons!!

That would be much better than the C wing with 2 20mm and 4 .303 Big Grin (I know C wing was universal)

I'd actually say that is a very rare MkXIVe with four cannons (yes the E wing could take them). The outer gunports are completely absent (note there is no canvas patches over the leading edge where the guns would be), the barrel coverings are much shorter than those of the C (note the inner barrel, in C wing this is longer) and the cannon blister is very narrow (moreso than the C wing).

This is a possibility for the pack, thanks for the picture!

Wow thanks for the info, you are correct i should have noticed it was the rare universal E wing. On the C wing the inboard Cannon is actually sticking out further, its the complete opposite of the E wing. Also on the C wing as you pointed out they are closer to the fuselage.

In some ways I'm not surprised that there were 4 cannon Mk XVIs as that was the way RAF fighter development was leaning towards at the end of the war.

Anyway I will be make a slot for this variant (MkXVIe 4x 20mm, non-clipped)

Thanks a lot Anto, and yes they were leaning towards the 4 20mm....for instance Tempest V and II also the spitfire MK 21,22 and 24 all had 4 20mm....I think Hispano MK V's with the short barrels.

Later tempests used the Hispano MkV, all spitfires as far as I know used the Hispano MkII which stuck out of the wing rather than the short barelled MkV which was able to be completely concealed within the tempest wing

Sorry I should have specified which I meant, yes the later Tempest V's used the MK V's and to my knowledge the spitfire 24 and maybe the 22 used the MK V's also...
