[WIP] Map - New Georgia for the PTO
#16

Dont misunderstand me, I really could care less if someone wanted to cover a smaller area that is encompassed in TP's Slot maps, and try their own hand at it. While I do kind of find it redundant, I am watching this with a bit of enthusiasm to see what he wants to do with it.

What I can't stand, is the spreading of misinformation about the original Slot maps. This isnt the first time I've read that someone has said that the Slot maps were scaled, and I just stepped in to correct the situation. The Solomon Island chain built by TP is 1:1 scale. It is 550km from Henderson to the airbase on the south coast of Bougainville, if you measure the same distance in Google Earth, you will see that you get the same thing. You may get something like a 2% difference because of the curvature of the earth vs. the flatness of maps in Il2, but they are in fact 1:1 scale.

A long while back I once tried my hand at making new 3D tree textures... it never worked out though and I never got anything made. I was trying to make a 3D tree that would look somewhat more like a palm tree, for use on PTO maps or as palm tree groves in Middle Eastern areas.

I've found that 3D trees look very European or northern hemispheric, no matter what color they have, be they winter or summer, or let's say they certainly don't look tropical. That made PTO maps feel like places with European type forests, no matter where they were supposed to be located. But that's just something one has to accept as part of the game's inherent limitations ...

It's also a reason why I wanted to try making a PTO map without 3D trees, to see if perchance and hope beyond hope, if it didn't give a somewhat different and reasonably believable approximation of tropical jungle and vegetation ...

Sorry about that ... next time I'll check the math to be sure about what I'm saying (though I simply loathe mathematics from my school days ... ha ha).

I simply had the 'feeling' they were on a different scale ... don't know why. But if this isn't the first time it was said in a post, there must be an intangible reason ...

But still whatever - my mistake.

I think that this is about it. Agraciers want's to make a new version and it is OK. Now that the scaleproblem is solved, everything is calm and peacefull.
Happy mapmaking and modding in generally.

[quote="agracier"]Here's a new map inspired by watching too many episodes of 'the Pacific'. Guadalcanal has already been done and so has Palau, so very finely retextured by redko (a must have, especially for the shallows and coral reefs). Looking along the Solomons the island of New Georgia caught my eye for some reason. This is a map of the islands and surrounding areas with parts of Santa Isabel and Choiseul Islands and a host of lesser ones.

From what i could gather there were 2 airbases, one Japanese at Munda Point and and other American built strip at Segi Point. Both were in odd positions, near to beaches and made of crushed coral. I've tried to use textures reflecting that kind of terrain."

Thanks Agracier! Since it is still a work in progress during the early pacific war, Agracier, is there any way you could also still add the towering Munda hill (Kokengola Hill) on the Munda airstrip? It was perhaps the single most important feature on the airfield and one of the central Allied targets for their invasion.

The hill was occupied by the Japanese during the middle of November 1942. "Positions and defenses were built on the hilltop. The hill became a battlefield during early August 1943. This high ground around including Kokengola Hill fell to the US Army on on August 5, 1943."

"Immediately, Americans built a control tower for Munda Airfield atop this hill, completed by August 11, 1943. As the airfield was developed, other facilities were established on the hilltop."

Sure, I'll give it a try ... I haven't done much real terrain height altering so far other than smoothing river valleys and the occasional coastline, but I'll try and make a hill near the airport.

Odd it doesn't show up on the satellite DEM data ... maybe it's been flattened in the post-war years?

And if anyone has any suggestions for the airfields themselves, feel free to send a mis file for instance with placed objects.

From what i could gather of photos from Pacific Wrecks, these were very basic strips and so i only placed some masking nets, tents and some shacks and a small building or two with a small fuel tank.

Here's an altered height map that should show the hill:

I think I know what happened. When flattening the airfield terrain I must have been a bit too aggressive with the flattening, and done a too large area, thereby flattening the hill myself ...

Anyway, here is a new map_h.tga ... just pop it into your map folder and overwrite the older map_h. Only the very small area of the hill has been altered. Otherwise all terrain remains the same.

Hi Agracir, According to Pacific wrecks, the early 1943 Munda had taxi strips around the airstrip even in early 1943. Is there any way you could add them? It doesn't seem historicall accurate without them. Thanks

Secondly, for Segi airstrip: Segi had taxiways built by the end of July according to Hyperwar (it was invaded by the Amvericans in June):It is inaccurate according to the accounts not to have taxiways from late July onward... ...unless you are modelling the earliest days of the barely finished Segi strip...(Maybe you are!!!). From July 18 to the end of July the taxiways were being built according to Hyperwar.

"Segi Point.--In the wake of two small reconnaissance parties, 17 officers and 477 men of the 47th Battalion landed at Segi Point. No enemy resistance was encountered and unloading operations were begun immediately. Before the day was over work was started on clearing an airstrip and preparing revetments.

Nearly continuous rains for the first seventeen days slowed up work on the airstrip and made construction of roads almost impossible. The soil was largely clay, exceptionally difficult to work where wet. Coral was scarce and what little there was had a high content of clay, and consequently drained poorly. Work on the airstrip was carried on night and day until July 18, when enemy air raids seriously retarded night work. By that time, however, the field had been completed to a usable width of 150 feet and length of 3300 feet.

***By the end of July, two taxi loops with 28 hardstands were complete. Continuous enemy bombing resulted in one casualty, several cases of war neurosis, and damage to several pieces of equipment.***

a photo of october 1943 shows Segi strip having taxi ways as well.

Nice job. I'm currently playing a making a ccop campaign on the Pacific Team "the Slot" map.
I love their job indeed.
There was also a japanese strip at Villa on Kolombangara island and a seaplane base at Gizo island (japanese held).
Later, a strip was built at Barakoma on Vella Lavella Island, the famous homebase of the VMF214 (Baa Baa Blasksheeps).
You may also add the japanese stong point at Enogai Point (north coast of New Georgia) which had a japanese battery of 4x140mm naval guns.

I'll add these to an update - might be able to get it done before my summer walkabout begins .... otherwise will be for afterwards ...

Thanks for the info - I often find it very time-consuming to find relevant data for these kind of things. So your help is very much appreciated.

On another note, I have a map almost finished for Cape Gloucester - yes I saw 'the Pacific' - and at the moment it has only 2 airfields - one at Cape Gloucester itself and the other at Lae. Any inof you might have laying around on airfields in that area would also be put to good use.

Here's a shot of the FMB map:

viewtopic.php?t=4853 it took us 9-10 months to build and comes with 6 maps from 6 different time stamps of the campagin.

you can DL it here viewtopic.php?t=4854

it's just that you're about 2 years late on this topic.

I thing that have several MAPS on a same area is good.....It's not because an area is already done that u have to
forgot it and do something else......The TeamPacific MAP will be a must no problem with that ........ But for example
there is a Burmalower Map sowewhere...fine...But if any body wanna do anotether Map around the Rangoon it will be fine..

I don't think there really is clash between these two projects (the Slot and Agraciers new). Sometimes you want a big map, showing more, sometimes one that shows a little less. It depends on the mission. So keep it up, Agracier. Your line of maps are fabulous!
