IL2 1946 and Windows 7 doesn't want to start

Only if you're having probs with IL2 1946 and Windows 7. SecuROM is free and, I guess, removes some security aspects that have caused issues for some people. If you are not having any problems then you don't really need it.

@Bulau; I didn't have ANY mods with my previous version. I had a no-CD patch (damned if I can remember where I got it). It ran fine without the CD but now I'm back to square one, no biggie though. I haven't used any mods to date and don't plan on using any until after 4.10 comes out although it is taking a lot longer than I thought.

Yes, well, installation of ANY modpack, HSFX, UP, SAS, will eliminate the need for having the DVD in the drive.

Hi, 8FS_Bulau

Obviously he had not reached the point of mod pack installation in this latest reinstall. It is a good point to bring that he won't need the DVD after a mod pack.

Gents;
just to sort of wrap up my little saga with Windows 7. Essentially everything is sorted out. The one remaining issue was the requirement for the DVD in the drive. When I had upgraded to 4.09m on my old system (XP SP3) there was no longer a requirement for the DVD in the drive. When I upgraded to 4.09m on my new system (Win 7) and used the SecuROM etc as previously described it did not "convert" to a non-DVD version but it functioned. HOWEVER, after discussing this with my on-line colleagues, one of them sent me their fb.exe file which doesn't require the DVD. I renamed my fb.exe file to orig_fb.exe then placed the 'new' fb.exe into the IL2 folder and bingo! good to go. The game runs as before without the requirement for the DVD.

Just wanted to pass that on to anyone with a similar issue.

As far as I know, DVD installs which require the disk in the drive to run, have never been "converted" to non DVD operation simply by installing any of the official patches. Whatever you did before to get it to run without the disk, it must have been something other than, or more than, an official patch to 4.09m.

There have been, for many years, "no disk" files available, such as the one you got from your colleagues. The Russian versions of the game do not require the disk in the drive, and since all the Mod Activators are based on the Russian il2fb.exe, they too, run without the disk in the drive.

Bulau;
you're no doubt correct and I used a no-DVD crack. I'm probably confusing it with Silent Hunter 4 which became a no-DVD required game after version 1.4.
I simply don't remember the no-DVD crack/patch (and can't find it in my "downloads" folder on my external drive). Regardless, I'm squared away now and one happy camper.

I also have problems with Windows 7
I use to run 2 versions one AAA and another one SAS, both modded (of course) on an external drive, both running perfect on XP
Bought 2 days ago an HP with Intel 3 CPU M330 2.13GHZ 4GO with NVIDIA Geforce G210.
For me it's simple: double click on fb icon (AAA or SAS) nothing happens, no asking for a CD, external disk works a while and.. nothing.

Thanks, for the time being I'm back on the old computer.
I haven't seen yet nothing about this kind of trouble, I'm not PC expert, but I know Win7 exists in 32bits and 64bits, and I have the last one.
Don't know if it is the reason for the failure.
Yesterday I tried to install from IL46 DVD same thing: some work few seconds, and nothing...
Keep looking around to find solution here and at SAS...

Dunois,

Using Windows 7 64-bit with IL-2 requires something, but I don't remember what it is. You definately do not want to run in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Don't use Service Pack 3). Only XP service pack 2 should be tried - I verify that.

IL-2 might run well in Windows 7 without compatibility mode.

Thanks again.
Changing a PC is nice, but drives you into unnexpected compatibility problems and IL46 is only one among others....
And I expect also some headache when new patch will come out, to reinstall all the stuff from the DVD...

Well tried this, but still no joy, seems the key point is new WIN7 runs in 64 bits and IL2 is made for 32.
Config pannel features only 32bits video settings.
I think this kind of problem will grow with more and more users running 64 bits systems.
Maybe a new mod will solve this problem....

Anyway thanks for the help

Running win 7 64 bit ultimate and have no problems what so ever running multipel installs of il2 1946.
this as 409.
ultrapack 2.01
and fusionpack.
turn of the securetysettings in win7, then install as admin and make it compitable with win xp sp2.
on homeversion of win7 it is more a PITA but also on my brand new laptop it wasnt really any problem making it working.
Also a good idea is to have it on its own partition.
I suspect alot of folks here only have c drive as the computers often come with only c partition.
Online are free partition programs. dl and make your own this as its better for windows too to have smaller patitions to work on.
You dont need a 500 gb c drive. make it at least down to 3-4 partitions instead. like i have. c/win7. then D/games, E/programs, F/ backup.
This makes windows faster as it has no need to search the entire 500 gb to find stuff.
if you have il2 on a other hardrive completly installed with ex xp then just copy the il2 folder over to a memorystick and paste it into win 7 and then make new shortcuts to desktopp.
