This map looks absolutely awesome. I only can judge by looking at screecshots, but when ever i can use my right hand probely (in 2 weeks), i will take a good look for this one. I can fly around but Dogfighting is no go for me ATM Sad. I'm planning to take a train trip from Helsinki to Lhasa in real life sometine during next 5 years....so this map will help me planning it hahaha! Then i see all the missing bridges and can inform mr. Agracier about them, so he can place them just right. I hope that chinese police or militia will not kill/arrest me as a spy, while taking pictures of bridges and coverment buildings. (It was strictly forbidden when i visited areas near Shanghai during 90Confused)
Agracier has reached 10 dan black belt of map making arts. Only thing is that we need custom objects for South East Asia and China + India
What else there is left? Africa maybe, some parts and Antarctica. WW2 maps of Belgium and Holland would be great. But population Belgium will be PITA.
I have looked "russian" version of Birds of prey ( found it at net... ) it looks beautifull and my old athlon dual core could run it smoothly. I just hope that they release BOB:SOW soon. Then we must start to build maps again. LOL

I can't remember how the mapname was chosen, probably because Hankow was a city name more in use amongst western historians. The other city/town names were taken from Google earth and therefore reflect present day names. An inconsistency I'm sure but just a way of getting the map done.

So I guess the Hankow/Wuhan bridge would be another inconsistency in the timeline, but, well it does make a nice target. I postulated a bridge because of the railroad crossing the river, but then again maybe back during WWII trains were ferried over the river in sections ... ?

If there is any real problem with calling the city Hankow, the name can always be changed ...

Hi, agracier, If u need some assured information for Wuhan(Hankou), I can help u.

the issue of placename is simple in fact. WuChang, HanKou , HanYang are 3 town , they composing one city is Wuhan.

Since 1927 3 town a general designation is Wu Han, means, Wu Chang + Han Kou + Han Yang

Another, you are right, before 1957, trains need ferried over the river.

This is Great Chairman mao's one poem

Swimming

I have just drunk the waters of Changsha
And come to eat the fish of Wuchang.
Now I am swimming across the great Yangtze,
Looking afar to the open sky of Chu.
Let the wind blow and waves beat,
Better far than idly strolling in courtyard.
Today I am at ease.
It was by a stream that the Master said --
"Thus do things flow away!"

Sails move with the wind.
Tortoise and Snake are still.
Great plans are afoot:
A bridge will fly to span the north and south,
Turning a deep chasm into a thoroughfare;
Walls of stones will stand upstream to the west
To hold back Wushan's clouds and rain
Till a smooth lake rises in the narrow gorges.
The mountain goddess if she is still there
Will marvel at a world so changed.

I found some link for Battle of Wuhan

I noticed that objects like boats and docks are not in the river but a bit above it.
Another thing: When I fly over Hankow the fps drops considerably but the city isn't densily populated with houses at all. This doesn't occur for instance when flying over Canonuk's London or Paris which do have a lot of houses as you know.
Or does the fps drop has to do with the variety of objects instead of using a lot of the same objects in one place?

Cheers,

L.

Just a noob question:
I re-read the gen. Zakharov's book "I, the fighter" who describes the flights above
Chan-kche, Nan-zhang. (Sorry for perhaps improper spelling)
It seems to be eastward from the region covered by the present wonderful map, isn't it ?

Laziness is the mother of progress. My QMB missions can be found here:

I suspect it is partly due to the variety of different objects indeed, but even if you don't notice it at first, the city is nonetheless densely populated. There are many different and copious numbers of trees and there are also many walls which are composed of quite small sections. Take all these sections of wall together and the number would undoubtedly be amazingly high. But since a wall looks so nice, gives definition when viewed from above and is also a good reflection of reality, it's hard to do without them.

Try and make a wall enclosing a city block in the FMB and you'll see just how small the sections of wall can be and how many are needed ...

The same happened when building trenches in the Chaco map. I once went overboard in placing defensive lines of trenches and bunkers around fort Bouqueron. It never looked like a large amount of objects from the air, but trench sections are very small in size, just like walls, and you need a large number of them to construct a trench line ...

Now, on my machine, a quadcore, flying over Hankow doesn't give much of a loss in frame rates, but it is quite noticeable nonetheless ...

That's why building cities in maps is such a conundrum - populate them lightly and it looks like you didn't spend much effort on making them, do it more diligently and you don't get much pleasure flying and fighting in their vicinity...

To Chinese people it would make sense to name it Wuhan.
However, I have several "western" published books and they all refer to this area as Hankow (during the war). It seems Americans, and especially the American Air Forces, liberally used the name Hankow for the general area of Wuhan.

The map looks great.

I noticed one problem - the airfield north of Anging is not levelled.

Still, very fun to fly on!

I like it! It conveys the atmosphere! Some of textures look very natural, some not quite, depends also from altitude you fly, I like flying low. The populated areas are great. Maybe some sparse-object farms on the fields here and there, there are huge areas with crop fields (although I'm ignorant of the specific of the region)... All in all it promises to become a magical map!
Many thanks for it and for the other maps you already created!

Hello again, latest report from the shift&tab front: WARNING: * * * */Unexpected txr reload (tfTranspBorder)/ 'effects/clouds/clouds4x4.tga'. Still unable to save missions in FMB (don't get the "bad water" error anymore as I removed those lines as suggested). Best regards,

Lovely map Agracier, thanks for uploading. Works with no problems for me.

Took the CW-21 for a spin. Nice view.

Problem solved! (persistence rewards...) I used the universal static.ini checker (great little mod, absolutely essential!) and discovered that I had only placed Fabianfred's objects in my MODs folder but not the relevant lines to my static.ini. So I did, and I flew for the first time over your latest creation. Outstanding job as always Agracier, and sorry again for any trouble caused. I grow older and wiser (?), Cheers,
